FOCUS – Flexible Optimization and Control under Uncertainty for Utility Systems

Challenge

Industrial companies face rising energy costs and increasing uncertainty caused by fluctuating energy prices, renewable energy generation and changing production demands. While many facilities have flexibility in utility systems such as steam, cooling, compressed air and thermal storage, these systems are often controlled using static rules that do not account for energy market dynamics or operational uncertainty. As a result, significant opportunities for cost savings and energy optimisation remain untapped.

Project goals

This project (FOCUS_IRVA) aims to develop an intelligent energy management framework that combines digital shadowing, energy-aware planning and robust control of industrial utility systems.

The project will investigate how uncertainty in renewable energy generation, production demand and system behaviour can be incorporated into optimisation and control algorithms.

By enabling more informed and adaptive decision-making, FOCUS seeks to reduce energy costs, improve operational flexibility and increase the efficient use of existing energy assets without disrupting production processes.
