Challenge

Preparing medical kits is a highly demanding process where accuracy is critical. Kits can contain a wide variety of medical components, often with subtle differences between parts. At the same time, kit configurations change frequently, requiring production processes to adapt quickly while maintaining consistently high quality standards.

Today, sorting and assembling these kits remains largely manual. Skilled workers are needed to identify, pick and organise components correctly, often performing repetitive and sometimes hazardous tasks. With catalogues containing more than 20,000 different parts, maintaining accuracy while dealing with labour shortages is a growing challenge.

Existing automation solutions struggle to combine the required accuracy with sufficient flexibility. Mechanical counting systems are typically limited to specific components, while robotic solutions often require frequent human intervention when handling mixed, unstructured parts. Picking errors can lead to expensive rework, longer lead times and additional operational costs.

Project Goals

In this project (MEDIKIT_IRVA), we aim to develop a reliable robotic solution for sorting and assembling medical kits, reducing manual effort while meeting the strict accuracy requirements of medical applications.

The project combines advanced computer vision, AI-based part identification and robotic picking techniques to recognise and handle a wide variety of medical components without relying on CAD models. Real-time monitoring and automated error recovery will help the system detect disturbances, adapt its actions and minimise human intervention.

The project targets 99.5% kit accuracy, 99.5% part identification accuracy and a maximum of 10 human interventions per 24 hours, demonstrated on a selected subset of medical parts.

By improving the accuracy and robustness of automated kitting, MEDIKIT_IRVA aims to help medical device manufacturers and healthcare providers reduce rework, address labour shortages and make medical kit preparation more efficient and scalable.
