Design for supply chain resilience

Design for supply chain resilience

Challenge

Today’s business environment is characterized by supply chain disruptions and shortages throughout the supply chain. Supply chain resilience minimizes the impact of disruption through design approaches, which allows the supply chain to respond appropriately to disruptive events. This project proposes a framework to identify and mitigate supply chain risks by incorporating resilience in the early product design. The risk is determined at the component level. Resilience can be built into the product design through, e.g., component modularity, component substitution, or multi-sourcing strategies.

Project goals

Develop a framework to incorporate resilience in the early product design

  • Which components require resilience?
  • How do we develop a system easily adaptable and that can cope with changes in components or suppliers?
  • What is the ‘desired’ degree of resilience based on a cost-benefit analysis?
