Digital twins in the manufacturing industry are a game-changer, making the sector "smarter" by enhancing efficiency, reducing operational costs, and improving production quality. The end-to-end manufacturing process data and knowledge is combined to push data analysis and decision making beyond the limits of traditional localized digital twins.

In this two-part workshop day, we focus on skills involving Virtual Comissioning and the development of a Knowledge Graph. The integration of context-aware digital twins with virtual commissioning creates a powerful tool for manufacturers. It allows not only for the sophisticated simulation and optimization of manufacturing processes but also ensures these processes are robust and efficient when deployed in the real world. Together, these technologies foster a proactive approach to manufacturing management, where decisions are data-driven and operations are seamlessly optimized for both performance and sustainability.

Physics-based Digital Twins

6 November - Afternoon session @ KU Leuven

Digital twins address a broad range of challenges where data must be collected, transferred, and integrated with various models to generate value for different stakeholders. Navigating these aspects can be challenging, especially within specific application contexts.

In this session, we will present a general digital twin framework, covering stages from the physical asset, through measurements, to corresponding models. We will demonstrate how digital twins can be exploited in product engineering, using a vehicle example to illustrate the framework stages. This case will show how concrete methodologies add value from design to the operational phase by tracking key system parameters.

The session will focus on applications where dynamics are crucial, combining various measurements with different model types (lumped parameter and finite element) to provide enhanced insights into the behavior of complex systems.

Knowledge Graph as enabler FOR a context-aware Digital Twin

7 November - Morning SESSion

A Knowledge Graph is the core of a context-aware digital twin. This session will cover practical skills such as modelling an ontology-based Knowledge Graph, linking different data sources to a Knowledge Graph, interacting with a Knowledge Graph during analyses and storing new insights in a Knowledge Graph. These skills significantly boost the intelligence of Digital Twin solutions and make an important contribution to further optimising product quality.

Virtual Commissioning: SmartFactory Demo & Lab visit

7 November - Afternoon session

Virtualisation allows concepts to be validated for their specifications, e.g. feasibility, throughput, etc. Once the concept has been established, work can be done in parallel on programming and testing the control of the virtual machine before connecting it to the actual machine. This significantly reduces the total time to market.

Insights from SIEMENS

SmartFactory is a demonstrator, a flexible assembly line on which current best practices of the technology are shown. With this, we want to inspire companies and open their eyes to the possibilities. One of the partners in the SmartFactory is SIEMENS.

During this session, SIEMENS will take you through their advanced toolchain. You will get an overview of the different applications and their specific uses. In addition, the integration possibilities with other 3rd-party tools, such as Unity, will be discussed. This will be followed by how SIEMENS has deployed this toolchain in various practical cases, including the SmartFactory.

Get inspired by concrete examples and discover how these technologies are shaping the future.
