Tech@Lunch: Optical fiber sensors for asset monitoring

Flanders Make serves Tech@Lunch

During our Tech@Lunch webinars, one of our specialists will elaborate on a hot topic in only half an hour. This way, you get a maximum of inspiration in a minimum of time. The session that takes place on Monday 6 May 2024 between 12h30 and 13h00, will be about 'Optical fiber sensors for asset monitoring'. This topic is presented by Sidney Goossens, FlandersMake@VUB.

Short introduction to this session

The topic of this session from the Tech@Lunch series is 'Optical fiber sensors for asset monitoring'.

In this Tech@Lunch session... You will learn about Optical fiber sensors (OFS). They are increasingly used for the monitoring of strain, temperature, pressure etc… in assets, owing to their many advantages compared to their traditional electronic counterparts: they have a small diameter, they are immune to electromagnetic interference and crosstalk, they are corrosion resistant, and they can be multiplexed. Compare for example hundreds of strain sensors within a single optical fiber to the cabling complexity of the same number of strain gauges. In this tutorial, Flanders Make@VUB will give a brief overview of the operational principles of 1) point-based OFS, 2) fully distributed OFS, and 3) specialty OFS, as well as concrete case studies to showcase their potential for asset monitoring.

The session is free, but you need to register
