Nerdland Festival 2025

Event address
Flanders Make takes part in Nerdland Festival again
We are once again participating in this year's Nerdland Festival. You might know Nerdland from their podcasts, books or shows. Now the team of Lieven Scheire and Hetty Helsmoortel have joined forces to organise the Nerdland Festival.
Nerdland festival is Belgium's biggest open-air science festival. The place to be for nerds, geeks and all their (possibly less geeky) friends and family members. Think of an island full of interesting organisations, even more atmosphere and huge amounts of science. Off the cuff, but in a scientifically responsible way. For everyone.
Together with the other Strategic Research Centres, we will be in the booth around ‘Always on Research’, where we will show how scientific research goes on at our place. Specifically, the SOCs here zoom in on A.I., space and microscopy. We will bring two robots with us this year, one will show A.I. in a four-in-a-row game and one will automate the signing of books and items for Lieven and Hetty.
So make sure to stop by if you're visiting!
Connect four
This demo combines a number of interesting technologies for playing Connect four. There is, of course, the robot, which uses a specific gripper to pick up the discs. But also a camera that can use image recognition to detect which pieces are in play and how the game board is currently constructed, in order to calculate the optimal move. Whether it performs this optimal move, in turn, depends on a chosen difficulty level. Finally, there is also a special camera that can determine the position and angle of all the discs on a stack so that the robot can grasp them optimally.
Autograph robot
Lieven Scheire and Hetty Helsmoortel naturally enjoy signing everything the fans throw at them, but even if they did this continuously, for three days, they would still not be able to provide all the fans with autographs. Our autograph robot can automate that task, allowing more fans to go home with an autograph. At the same time, it frees up time for Lieven and Hetty to set up fun shows on stage. An interesting win-win for all parties!
