Local production of mouth masks

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a huge demand for mouth masks. Unfortunately it appears that not all supplied mouth masks meet the quality requirements set by the Belgian and European legislator. These bad masks do not fit and filter as they should. Especially the FFP2 masks, which our doctors and nurses use on direct contact with covid-19 patients, should certainly meet these requirements. In this way, our care providers can continue to do their job in a safe way.

In order to tackle this problem, UAntwerp has started to develop its own production line of FFP2 & FFP3 masks. This project, in collaboration with a number of universities, textile manufacturers and Flanders Make, aims at a rapid roll-out of a complete emergency production line for FFP2 & FFP3 masks. The first 20,000 copies are expected in April.

Flanders Make is closely involved in this initiative and we are using our expertise to strengthen the project. Our concrete role can be found below.

Role of Flanders Make?

The role of Flanders Make within this project is focused on:

  • Support in the automation of production;
  • Programming of robots in the production line;
  • Support with the bonding processes in the production;
  • General organisation of the production line.
