Automation of skid welding process for plastic pallet construction
Schoeller Allibert, the European market leader in reusable industrial solutions for plastic packaging, partnered with Flanders Make through an SME support programme to find an automated solution for manual operations in their plastic pallet production line. The company thus wanted to reduce labour intensity and improve the division of labour between operators.
The challenge lay mainly in developing a robust pick-and-place system for assembly parts in combination with a vision system. The solution had to be flexible enough for different product assemblies, including different sizes, shapes, colours and tolerances. In addition, the work cell had to provide a safe environment for operators to intervene, change and flexibly adjust the system.

What did Flanders Make do for Schoeller Allibert?
We conducted a feasibility study on the assembly line, focusing on the Bayopal 1210 model. From the study flowed the proposal to use a vision system in combination with a work cell for collaborative robots (cobots), for detecting and manipulating assembly parts.
The proposed solution uses the existing transport system to bring the required plates within reach of the cobot. The plates can be flexibly placed in a box and detected by the PickIt system. This information controls the picking and placing actions of the cobot.
The proposed work cell provides a safe environment for operators, thanks to the cobot's safety features. The analysis confirms the feasibility of building an automated production line using cobots, which offers flexibility, robustness, efficiency and operator-friendliness. The intuitive robot programming and intrinsic features of the work cell facilitate easy product changeover. The feasibility study included the conceptual design, technical validation tests, cycle time estimation, cost overview and profitability estimation of the proposed solution.
