The quality of medication is (literally) of vital importance. That is why the pharmaceutical sector places very high demands on accurate and effective quality control procedures. However, existing inspection systems are expensive and therefore not accessible everywhere.

In order to solve the above-described problem, we examined the possibility of developing a quality system consisting of a low-cost vision system and open-source image processing software. In this way, we can reduce costs without compromising on functionality. The system that we developed can count pills on an assembly line regardless of their colour, size, shape... In addition, the software can be expanded with A.I. functionalities, which will pave the way for more complex tasks such as the detection of discolouration or contamination of tablets.
