Energy efficiency in drives

Tech@Lunch: A gamechanger for drives - Measuring energy losses with calorimetry

No drive system is 100% efficient - energy conversion always involves losses. To make drive systems more sustainable, it is crucial to understand and minimise these losses. However, classical measurement methods on test benches require expensive sensors and do not always deliver the desired accuracy.

Therefore, Flanders Make offers an innovative solution: the calorimetric test stand in Kortrijk, unique in Flanders. In this method, the test object is placed in a well-insulated environment, where heat losses are accurately measured via controlled air currents. This provides up to 10 times better accuracy than traditional test benches.

However, a challenge remains the long test time - up to 8 hours per measurement point. Within the IRVA CALORIL project, we are developing smart algorithms to speed up this process, leading to shorter test times and lower costs for the industry.
