Product∞ion intelligence – How we put AI to work in the industry

Artificial intelligence is influencing more and more aspects of our daily lives. Algorithms assess whether our e-mails are spam or not, recognise friends and family in our photos and recommend products in online shops based on your online buying behaviour. Consumers come into contact with AI almost daily; in industry, however, the integration of AI is a lot more difficult. Consequently, there are a series of additional challenges in the industry that stand in the way of AI adoption. With product∞ion intelligence, Flanders Make offers an answer to these challenges, a solution that has since been applied in a series of cases. 

Artificiële intelligentie in the industry

Artificial intelligence isn't a new technology anymore; it is woven into a lot of technologies and platforms we use every day. In fact, it is often not always obvious to the end user that a particular algorithm has been applied. Platforms like Facebook and Netflix use algorithms to hold your attention for as long as possible, Amazon applies them for product recommendations, Google Maps for determining your optimal travel route, etc. So AI is already very well integrated into our lives, often without us even realising it. 

In industry, that integration is a different story. If an online store recommends a number of products and 50% of those recommendations are relevant to the visitor, that is a huge added value. An industrial system that has to assess whether a product has no defects that only gets it right 50% of the time would be a huge problem. The impact becomes even greater when moving parts such as robotic arms and drivelines are involved, a wrong decision by an AI algorithm could then quickly cause major damage. 

Product∞ion intelligence

For the industry, it is therefore very important that AI algorithms function reliably before being deployed. The fact that AI is often a 'black box', making decisions without being able to offer a grounded explanation for them, is not a reassuring factor in this respect. At Flanders Make, we therefore add domain knowledge as an extra layer, which we deploy in various ways to make the results of the AI algorithm reliable after all. We call this combination between AI and domain knowledge product∞ion intelligence.
