What is TETRA?

TETRA is a program for practice-oriented research by colleges of higher education and integrated training in universities for companies and non-profit organizations.

TETRA projects aim to translate recently available knowledge into concrete, useful information so that the target group can innovate faster and more efficiently. This may involve new technology, recently completed research or existing knowledge from another domain or sector.

The target group for the project results are Flemish companies and/or non-profit organizations. The projects have at least an economic finality (to be translated into competitiveness, employment and investments in enterprises in Flanders). In addition, the project can address a social challenge.

The projects must also fit in with the educational assignment of the applicant(s). There is a demonstrable relationship, added value and transfer of knowledge from the project to the college education(s)/integrated education(s) of the applicant(s). There is a clear added value for the students who graduate in these programs.

Who can apply for TETRA projects?

The applicant or several applicants of a TETRA project is a research group of a Flemish university college and/or university, which is actively engaged in practice-based research. There is a demonstrable relationship and knowledge flow from the project to university college courses, respectively integrated courses of the applicants. The applicants appoint a lead applicant and project coordinator.

  • Research groups associated with the professional bachelors can first submit a 1-year TETRA preparation project as a preliminary project.
  • Other research groups or accredited European Research and Knowledge Dissemination Organizations may jointly participate in a TETRA project for up to 1/3 of the budget as a partner or as a large subcontractor (if the subcontracting exceeds € 8,500).
  • Companies, individuals, clusters, federations or government agencies cannot be applicants or partners, but can play an important role as a member of the guidance group in steering the project, exchanging knowledge with the researchers and widely disseminating the project results.

For whom are TETRA projects intended?

The project results should be usable in the short term, after the end of the project, so that a broad group of Flemish, especially SMEs and non-profit organizations (preferably not R&D intensive companies), can innovate faster and more efficiently. The project results give rise to economic (competitiveness, employment and investments) and possibly social benefits for the target group.

Good interaction with the companies in the target group before (during the preparation phase), during (in a support group) and after the project is essential. The knowledge needs to be passed on to students in higher education through college courses and integrated courses.
