Machines and production processes subject to (sudden) external variations/events have challenging control tuning:
- Become adaptive and resilient to future shocks and stresses (events) due to changes in environmental conditions – supply inputs – demand
- Towards sustainability and circularity by design à using recycled materials à coping with varying process supply inputs
- Human actions can be unpredictable à unpredictable timing of human feedback
In order to increase the robustness in terms of stability and performance of controllers, while leveraging the omnipresent industrial PID controllers, industry could extend the design and tunability of their PID controllers by switching to Fractional Order PID controllers. This calculus allows for a more flexible and versatile design and tuning of the controller to better cope with delay-dominant dynamics, as well as with (sudden) context changes/events, due to the inherently robust nature of the FOPID.
