Value driven Concept design for product-manufacturing co-design of mechatronic product families (VaDoFam_ICON)

When designing a new product variant, designers should be able to have access to historical design and manufacturing knowledge, in order to improve the product. This is typically not the case, resulting in suboptimal products or product families, longer design cycles and lost profit.

In this project, we are looking to create formal methods and tools to support value engineering processes; i.e. the process of increasing the value of a product in new variants of said product. These models will build on previous research, linking product function and production line structure and allowing for a link with performance and cost evaluation. This creates a suitable model for trade-off analysis between design candidates.

The industrial benefits are improved designs due to better trade-off analysis, increased margins, less redesign in the later design stages, better reuse across designs and better insight in the structure of product families.

VaDoFam is an ICON-project (Interdisciplinair Coöperatief Onderzoek – Interdisciplinary Cooperative Research). We are looking for companies to join the consortium and work with us on the valorisation of the project.
