Choosing a suitable MES solution for the digitisation of your production floor
Event address
Goals
You have a clear need to further digitalise the production floor, but no idea how to select the most appropriate production support software (or typically known as MES) for your company? Via this master class, the MES4SME living lab wants to help (SME) production companies to take a first step in this matter. After all, it is important to first map out what your exact needs are before comparing solutions and making a selection.
This masterclass will answer the following questions:
- What exactly does MES add in terms of functionality on top of a typical ERP solution?
- Which solutions exist today and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
- Is this one integrated solution or can I also combine best-of-breed modules from different suppliers?
- How do I best map out the specific needs of my production environment?
- How can I structure the selection process and compare different solutions in a uniform way?
- How much does an MES solution cost? Can a Return on Investment (ROI) be estimated for my specific situation?
Target group
We address all (SME) production companies from all sectors that are considering the purchase of production support software but do not have sufficient insight into its possibilities and a good working method to select a suitable solution.
Job profiles: C-level managers, directors, production managers, operations managers and IT managers.
Programme
Time | Topic |
---|---|
9h30 | Reception and MES4SME introduction (Prof. Johannes Cottyn – Flanders Make@UGent) |
9h45 | Mapping the MES landscape: What choices can you make? (Prof. Johannes Cottyn - Flanders Make@UGent) Production support software (typically called MES or MOMS) can be realised in many ways: One larger platform or several integrated smaller modules, standard or tailor-made, ERP extension or a dedicated package, and of course through the choice of many commercial solutions each with their strengths (both in terms of functionality and sector). Can't see the forest for the trees? This presentation gives you a helicopter view of all the possibilities and explains the most important terms and concepts so that you are sufficiently armed for your selection process. |
10h45 | What can an MES bring us? (Arne Bracke – Logflow) How to determine the scope of an MES project? It seems that we always have to understand what an MES can offer before we can define our own scope... Isn't that the world upside down? How can we start from our needs? Why did we decide that we need an MES? |
11h30 | The approach of a successful MES traject – use case (Thomas Vanslembrouck (Project Manager Digital) and Niels Colson (Managing Director) – DD Engineering) Thomas and Niels guide you through their experiences with implementing MES projects. This on the basis of an understandable use case. They will include both organisational and content-related topics, and ensure that the pitfalls and risks are mapped out. This for the different phases of the project. |
12h15 | Sandwich lunch |
13h00 | Standard method for MES selection (Gerard Ipskamp – MOMi) In this selection method based on MESA white papers (mesa.org), a shortlist of 3 possible solutions is made in the shortest possible time. With these 3 solutions a more extensive evaluation is done. In this story, the selection process will be explained as we have been doing for over 15 years. Emphasis will be placed on the financial substantiation and change management. These are not only part of the selection, but of an 'improvement circle'. |
13h45 | Our practical experiences with the selection procedure (Prof. Jürgen Van Erps - Flanders Make@VUB) Since 2013 we run a pilot line for freeform optics within the research group B-Phot. Our digitisation challenges are similar to those of (SME) production environments. Within the MES4SME living lab, we function as a demonstration environment to illustrate the MES selection and implementation process from A to Z. Today, we will give an overview of the working method and our experiences with the MES selection process. |
14h15 | Break |
14h30 | Get to work yourself with tools and templates for MES selection (The MES4SME team) Within the MES4SME living lab, a methodology was developed to support SMEs in taking the first steps towards MES selection. The accessible tools and templates are first explained and then you can start working hands-on with them to map out your company situation. The necessary guidance will be provided. |
16h15 | Wrap-up (Prof. Johannes Cottyn – Flanders Make@UGent) |
16h30 | Networking reception |
