Ugani produces improved and affordable prostheses for developing countries
Ugani Prosthetics is a Flemish social startup whose mission is to lower the prices of prosthetics. Mainly in developing countries, where healthcare is less extensive, they want to make prosthetics more accessible. They do this through various techniques and strategies, including lean management, supply chain optimisation, frugal innovation and digitalisation. To make the production of their prosthetics even more efficient, Ugani called on Flanders Make's expertise to also develop a low-cost version of the shin tube, through a feasibility study.
"Together with Flanders Make, we developed a tibial prosthesis that can be manufactured anywhere, with standard materials available everywhere."

What did Flanders Make do for Ugani
During the project, several design iterations were created and tested. In our lab, we tested the proposals for torsion, load and durability. Using state-of-the-art testing equipment, we subjected parts of the prosthesis to a variety of stresses to ensure they would hold up. Meanwhile, Ugani's team tested the proposals in the field in Benin, to make sure the parts could be produced locally and users were satisfied with the results. In the end, we found the ideal intersection of durability, affordability and simplicity. We also developed a tibial prosthesis that can be produced anywhere, with standard materials available everywhere. It requires only minimal and simple welding, yet meets all strength requirements. It offers the same degree of adjustability and comfort as existing alternatives. But most importantly, the final price is between 10 and 20 euros.
Ugani produced a few of these units and handed them to African patients. Their response was simple: ‘I don't feel or see any difference’. For most products, this would be a disappointment. But for this low-cost product, it is everything the team wanted to hear.
