For systems that present a low level of uncertainty, as it is often the case with mechatronics systems, advance open loop control techniques can boost their performance. In this talk, we review several approaches to consider when implementing open loop control laws. We illustrate with concrete applications such as a printing machine, a transmission based on a wet clutch or an energy management system.

PID feedback controllers (Proportional Integral Derivative) are the backbone of most practical mechatronic controls. In this talk, we introduce standard techniques for PID feedback controllers. We focus on novel applications that make use of information from the controllers to improve the performance of the system. As such, we approach amongst others feedforward control methods in combination with feedback controllers. In addition, we illustrate with two examples of PID controllers applied to a laser hardening process and vibration suppression applications.

Uncertainty and variability in machines with repetitive tasks

In order to deal with uncertainty and variability in the system, basic PID control techniques have to be extended to more advanced techniques. This leads to adaptative control for non-repetitive tasks and iterative learning control for repetitive tasks. We use real cases, such as a weaving machine, to exemplify the applicability of both techniques.

Automated guided vehicle and Additive Manufacturing applications (see what we've already done on path planning)

In this talk, we present control methods and techniques for path planning applications where no (or very little) human interaction is possible. We address the common problems of obstacle-avoidance (both fixed and moving) as well as switching positions from local to global coordinates and vice-versa. Finally, we illustrate the theory with two applications: an autonomous guided vehicle (AGV) and a laser for additive manufacturing.

Practical implementation, testing and validation of controllers

Complex controllers are often first made and then tuned using simulation models, after which validations are performed on simplified hardware or dedicated test benches/machines, before finally being deployed in the full machine. In this talk, we present how non-standard controllers can be deployed easier, cheaper and faster by means of rapid-prototyping tools. We show specific hardware for testing and rapid-prototyping systems, and share some tips and tricks.

EcoNation is a Belgian company specialised in the development, production and installation of light domes for industrial buildings. They discuss the compact and smart light tracker, which was optimised in the Mechatronica 4.0 project. The project directly contributed to the control algorithms for the rotating mirror, thus significantly increasing the efficiency of the LightCatcher.
