The project addresses an optimal platform generation method for families of modern mechatronic systems that exhibit a strong interaction between different components. Examples of such systems are drivelines, gearboxes, weaving machines, compressor elements, etc. As a result of the strong coupling between the various components, the design for optimal commonality in their product families is different from a design for optimal product performance, requiring a different design approach. The target group of this project is composed of machines builders & component manufacturers, as well as tool builders.
In this project we will be working on an efficient and versatile design methodology for platform generation and (product) family optimisation that identifies which components can be fixed (standardized) and which need to be customized for different product variants. In the end, the optimal platform for a family of product variants can be made by selecting a number of fixed components that perform well in a wide operation range, and tailoring others to the product variant.
The methodology will support Flemish technology leaders in facilitating product differentiation for specific customer needs. It will help identifying platform opportunities within existing product families and optimizing the different variants that are required.
