Faster assembly and maintenance through Augmented Reality (FAMAR_ICON)

Modern production environments are characterized by a high degree of flexibility and customization, resulting in specialized machines operating at low production volumes. As a consequence, a modern production environment counts multiple machine configurations, which complicates both initial assembly and follow-up maintenance as operators cannot have a detailed knowledge of each specific machine configuration. Manufacturing companies are thus looking for ways to provide operators and technicians with adequate training and with just the necessary information for the task at hand. Augmented Reality (AR) provides the answer, but it means that AR system providers need to make their products affordable for small series and must be able to test their solutions within the complexity of a real factory environment.

The goal of this project is to create a user-centred AR authoring methodology and supporting tools for the assembly and maintenance of small series and one-off machines, reusing as much as possible existing machine information. For that aim, we will

  • Reduce programming effort by developing a software interface dedicated to AR assembly and maintenance, based on available design-phase data from the product, components and tool, and real-time sensor data from tools and components.
  • Make existing identification and tracking algorithms sufficiently robust for use in a factory environment.
  • Device appropriate User Interfaces to display the information and to allow hands-free interaction.
  • Connect the AR application with other systems to ensure a standardized, solid workflow.

FAMAR is an ICON-project (Interdisciplinair Coöperatief Onderzoek – Interdisciplinary Cooperative Research). We are looking for companies to detail the project content with us and define use cases for valorisation of the project results.
