Impact Assessment of product changes on the assembly (ImpAss_ICON)

The overall goal of the project is to support design and process engineers in assessing the impact of a new product variant on the existing assembly line. They need to do this as early as possible in the design process and need to be able to select the optimal solution when changes are needed.

In order to avoid physical prototypes and validation, models are necessary. However, it is unclear which information these models should contain. We identified 3 technological barriers:

  1. The need for a certain abstraction level of the required models.
  2. The absence of formals links between the models of products and their assembly systems, resulting in costly, error-prone and time-consuming design iterations.
  3. Assuming formal links are available and can be used for (computer-aided) impact assessment, visualization of the link between product and assembly in an intuitive way is necessary to support the work of the multidisciplinary group of designers

For this ICON-project (Interdisciplinair Coöperatief Onderzoek – Interdisciplinary Cooperative Research), we are looking for companies to join the consortium. One of the roles of the companies in the consortium will be to select relevant uses cases to define the necessary abstraction level in the modelling. Furthermore, we will be working together on establishing the formal link between product and assembly, capturing the dependencies between product parts and assembly parts, by using Domain Specific Languages. Lastly, we will define best practises.
